Sovereign AI

AI infrastructure, models and data under the jurisdiction and control of a country, region or organisation, rather than depending fully on foreign providers.

Definition

Sovereign AI covers national compute, models trained on local languages and data, and rules on where data is stored and processed. NVIDIA describes it as a nation's capability to produce AI using its own infrastructure, data, workforce and business networks.

For companies, the question shows up as data residency, choice of cloud region, reliance on a few foreign model providers, and regulation. Options range from regional hosting of commercial models to running open-weight models in your own data centres.
